Enterprise Infrastructure (EI)
EI is that global technology group that delivers the software and hardware technology solutions that make our businesses run. The team manages the production,operations, and engineering of our data centers, voice and data networking solutions, wireless technologies, server and database operations, desktops,servers and mainframes.
The UNIX Engineering team is responsible for designing and implementing Linux infrastructure for Morgan Stanley's. The group is involved in evaluation,certification, integration, and maintenance of various products, including hardware, Operating Systems, such as Red Hat Linux and Solaris, system services(DNS, DHCP, NTP, syslog, etc.), file systems (NFS, AFS, Hadoop and variouscluster file systems), High Availability, Virtualization technologies and avariety of in-house developed tools.
The role requires in-depth understanding of x86 server hardware (cheap commodity stuff all the way to multi-terabyte SMP systems) and individual hardware components (CPUs, NICs, SSD, GPUs, etc). A typical day might involves trying to diagnose and debug undesirable hardware / firmware / OS interactions,working on a pluggable framework for collecting/managing power and thermal datafrom an array of different servers and working in the lab trying to find out why the latest engineering sample of some new platform isn't booting. The role will also involve troubleshooting problems escalated from experienced system administrators.
* Good understanding of UNIX and/or Linux system fundamentals.
* Exceptional knowledge of x86 hardware internals.
* Good Perl programming skills.
* Experienced UNIX System Administrator (Red Hat Linux preferred).
* Effective troubleshooting skills and practical experience with system programming (network/socket, IPC, threads).
* Good knowledge of network protocols.
* Working knowledge of Linux and/or Solaris kernels.
* Good knowledge of C, gdb, crash, dtrace/systemtap, ftrace, oprofile, andother debugging tools
* Knowledge of virtualization technology.
* Knowledge, awareness and contributor to open source projects would be an ideal fit.
